The route at a glance

The Ilmtal-Radweg follows the Ilm for about 123 kilometres, from its source near Allzunah in the Thuringian Forest to where it joins the Saale at Großheringen. After the forests of the upper valley, the landscape opens into meadows and small villages. You pass Kranichfeld, Bad Berka and Weimar, the town of Goethe and Schiller, and near the end you can take a break in the thermal baths of Bad Sulza. The paths are well signposted and mostly flat, making it a good route for a few unhurried days.
